Anthony, founder of themusicreviewshow, discusses his passion for music, supporting North Carolina’s independent bands, discovering new artists, and using music to bring people together for meaningful causes.
1. Hi Anthony, welcome to The Interviewist! Let’s start at the beginning. You mentioned that the idea for themusicreviewshow came to you while sitting in your car and thinking about your future. Can you take us back to that moment and explain what inspired you to turn your passion for music into a platform dedicated to reviewing and interviewing artists?
Thanks for having me and yea it just was me thinking about man what’s something I always talk about, that I can do with my life and I think I was on TikTok and saw a food review and the idea hit, how about make a show about music reviews and thus themusicreviewshow was born.
2. Your journey began with video reviews, including your first review of the North Carolina band Camisole, before evolving into artist interviews. What was the response to those early videos like, and how did your first interview with Panes influence the direction of themusicreviewshow?
The responses where Great most bands love the fact that someone showcased them and explain why they love it so It gave me more motivation to keep making reviews about bands but then panes came along and I asked if I can interview them and that gave me a spark to interview bands cause every band has a different answer to the questions plus with the whole band it gives more personality to the vids so that’s how it shaped the show.
3. One of your main goals is to give more exposure to local bands in North Carolina. From your experience, what makes the state’s music scene special, and why do you think so many talented artists there still struggle to receive the recognition they deserve?
When we look at it, North Carolina has a big Music scene from the likes of John Coltrane in blues music that inspire probably more players to get into music and I think the music scene here can really showcase to people that we have a mix of other states scenes while making our own name for music and the reason why I think band have a hard time is because people are going to compare them to bigger bands and not try to listen to the music.
4. You cover music across different genres and seem particularly interested in bands that experiment with their sound. When discovering a new artist, what qualities immediately catch your attention, and how do you approach your reviews while staying honest and supportive of the musicians you feature?
Anything can really qualify for me to look into them and review them and interview them, but I stay honest by telling them I fell with their music in a positive way cause all the bands are working hard and will always support the musicians.
5. Beyond music journalism, you also organized a charity event with The Den to support children in Palestine. What inspired you to get involved in this initiative, how did the experience affect you personally, and do you see themusicreviewshow becoming a platform for more charitable and community-driven events?
100% and I always wanted to do something to help, and music was the way for me to do my support for Palestine and It shaped me knowing that I can bring people together to help make a difference and I’m hoping to do more events for more causes and awarenesses to things I need funding, always down to help.
6. You’re currently working toward reaching 5,000 followers while continuing your mission to showcase North Carolina’s local music scene. Looking ahead, what are your biggest ambitions for themusicreviewshow, and what would you like to say to independent musicians who are still waiting for their music to be discovered?
Always believe in yourself and your band mates and keep focusing on the music and people will come and enjoy it. And my biggest ambition is to showcase nc and one day being able to make my own music venue or make a interview room but my ambition will always be to support the bands and showcasing all of them.
